ou know about the WTO [World Trade Organization], right? Việt Nam joined the WTO today. That means Việt Nam is going to be strong, and develop fast! Now we will compete with America! Vietnamese sign languages will develop fast too, and compete with America [ASL] (laughs). I’m just joking. . . . Deaf [people] cooperate. It’s not important if you are Vietnamese or American. After dinner one evening in July 2007, nine people attending a signed-languagebased education program for Deaf adults in southern Việt Nam1 chatted about Vietnamese national development and Deaf people’s place in it. Công2 turned to me and made the comment given in the epigraph, smiling playfully as he marked his attention to transnational relationships between Deaf people.
