Phonological realizations of three types of compounds in Japanese Sign Language

Based on Scalise and Bisetto’s (2009) three-way classification of compounds—coordinate, attribute, and subordinate—Asada et al. (2022) reported that the three types of com-pounds in Japanese Sign Language ( JSL) display variations in the number of repetitivehand movements in their compound forms compared with the dictionary forms of theconstituent words that form the compound. In this paper, we argue that repetitive move-ments are instances of reduplication and propose a constraint-based analysis of thephonological realizations of the three types of compounds in JSL. Under this analysis, the observed patterns of repetitions, which thus far have remained unclear, naturally fol-low from the ranking of constraints that we propose. One important implication of ourproposal is that it offers the first evidence from the sign language modality in support ofIto and Mester’s (2009, et seq.) theory concerning the recursion of prosodic categories.
