Language assessment is used in educational, clinical and research contexts to evaluate the language skills of different populations (children, adults, L1, L2 learners). This paper gives a brief overview of different approaches to sign language assessment. Three tools for sign language assessment are presented in more detail: the CotaSigne tool and the TELSF2 assessment for French Sign Language (LSF), and the SIGN‒HUB assessment tests for a range of European sign languages. These assessment tools illustrate qualitative and quantitative assessment methods of different aspects of language, covering narrative production and comprehension as well as lexical and syntactic comprehension tasks.
