Deaf people are part of the globalised workforce. Increasing focus on equality, diversity and inclusivity in workplaces requires consideration of deaf people’s access to, and opportunities in, employment. Various accommodations can be made in the workplace, but with legal recognition of sign languages in many countries, and increasing media visibility, it is important to acknowledge the skills that deaf people bring to workplaces. In this chapter, we will learn about deaf people and sign languages, the challenges that deaf people can face at work (with a focus on the UK), and the skills and strategies they use to navigate workplaces.
