Sign languages are the naturally evolved visual-gestural languages of deaf communities. There are many SLs, many of which are not mutually intelligible or historically related. A few of these languages are village-based (e.g., in the less urbanized and developed regions of the world) but most are urban-based and have strong historical links to schools for the deaf established between the 18th and 20th centuries during periods of industrialization and colonization.
