Poetry, literature, dance and music are all recognized forms of expression unique to the human experience. Yet there are instances where a community or culture redefines an artistic practice. This essay examines the role of music in the lives of individuals who do not hear. For a long time, deafness was thought to be a debilitating condition. Given that language plays an important role in the per- forming arts (including music through its lyrics), deaf individuals are expected to “endure the consequences” of their inability to hear. This has been challenged by a number of scholars and researchers over the last few decades, especially regarding language being confined to the spoken form.
