ASL is historically related to LSF of the early 19th century. In 1816 T. Gallaudet, a hearing american who had learned LSF in Paris, along with L. Clerc, a deaf native of France, brought LSF to the US. Popular tradition states that ASL subsquently developed from LSF, but there is a growing body of information that suggests that LSF was creolized with a sign language or languages already existing in the US.
