The vast body of research on Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is based on spoken languages, and comparatively little is known about the acquisition of sign languages. A learner of sign language (typically a hearing person), has to learn not only a new language (L2), but also a new modality (M2), i.e. the gestural-visual modality of sign languages in contrast to spoken languages’ oral-auditory modality.
