The presenters at the Symposium represented a variety of theoretical backgrounds and offered theories, descriptions and analyses relating to a considerable number of different signed languages. Given the breadth of the material, it was decided that it would be most appropiate to produce the proceedings of the conference in two separate volumes. The first volume focusses on studies of a structural nature and the second on studies relating to sign language usage.
