This chapter looks at several issues of theoretical and practical importance for signed language interpreters. We begin by considering some of the challenges that face interpreters before turning to investigate the constraints imposed by the interpreting process. From there, we will consider the strategies that interpreters use to maximize their perfomance, including some strategies that have been considered "miscues", a label that we suggest is inappropiate in certain contezts.
