This article is written on the basis of my PowerPoint presentation at the World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf, July 2003. It was an oral presentation which was interpreted to several Sign languages and some other spoken languages. I wanted it to be understandable for most people who are experts on Deafness - as all the Deaf participants and many of the hearing signing participants were - but who are not necessarily experts on all the scientific disciplines that I drew on in the presentation. I have tried to keep the simple language of the presentation in this written version too.
