It is generally believed that the origins of sign language varieties in Hong Kong can be traced to a small group of deaf people froma Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou who established private tuition for deaf people in Hong Kong in 1949. In order to empirically examine the claim that sign language varieties in Hong Kong developed partially from sign language varieties in Shanghai, this paper will examine the intuitive judgements of Hong Kong signers about the similiarities and difference in basic vocabulary items in sign language varieties in Shanghai and in Hong Kong.
