‘Baby signing’ is an augmentative communication approach that teaches babies keyword signing that they can use to communicate before they can talk. The movement is increasingly popular with parents, but it is sparking academic, political and even moral debate. But just how do we assess anecdote, observation and experiment in order to determine whether the enthusiasm greeting baby signing is justified?
