This project describes aspects of the historical and contemporary Deaf community in Europe, drawing on snapshots of Deaf experience in Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Finland and Poland. We also draw on the vast body of literature that documents, dissects, proscribes and describes deafness and Deafhood. Our goal has been to lead you on a journey, with insights from Deaf people in these countries. We aim to present the human face of signed language users, of a people with a heritage all too often overshadowed by their experience of linguistic and cultural suppression. Our task was to celebrate Deafhood, while, at the same time, problematising dominant views of deafness that permeate society.
