Signing communities emerging in the context of high incidences of deafness have attracted the attention of scholars of different disciplines, most notably in Deaf studies and sign language linguistics. Linguists believe that sign languages emerging in these circumstances may provide a rare opportunity to study new language isolates, the study of which holds the promise of contributing to someone of the key questions of modern linguistics, particularly with regard to the conditions that engender language.
