Deaf Studies is a relatively new multi-disciplinary research field. Whereas somecountries already have a fairly “long” Deaf Studies tradition, other regions likeFlanders only recently started paying attention to it. The Deaf Studies researchalready conducted in Flanders is recent, very scarce and linguistically oriented. Inthis article the causal factors are examined as well as the challenges they present us with when considering the establishment of a Deaf Studies research and teachingprogramme in Flanders. It is argued that rather than aiming at such a programme, attention should be given to preparing the establishment of Deaf Studies researchand teaching units operating within larger academic departments and invest ininternational collaboration with existing Deaf Studies programmes/centres.
