Until recently, deafness has been looked upon primarily as a medical problem as sickness-something to be studied and cured. Deafness has been seen as a handicap, as if the only way to help a deaf person is to make him hearing. But because a deaf person is deaf, he can't be exactly like a hearing person. So, many people have reasoned that deaf people cannot be as good as hearing people.
