When community members fail to conform to community mores, they are in for some old-fashioned schoolyard ridicule. When a nonconformist is in a position highly visible to the hearing, however, her or she may actually be shunned, snubbed, excommunicated. Unfortunately, since the hearing world doesn't get to watch these public stonings, the technique is stunningly ineffective in silencing dissent and may actually be breeding and undergrounded.
