One of the major results obtained by research into Sign Language - both in Denmark and abroad - is the description of Sign Language as an autonomous visual language entirely different from Danish and other national languages. In fact, it has been demonstrated that the fundamental principles of the two languages are so disimilar that mixing them leads to meaninglessness and places the pupils in a situation in which they learn neither Danish or Sign Language. In this situation much of the knowledge that the teacher seeks to communicate is liable to be lost in linguistic misunderstandings and misinterpretations.
