Over the past years, research on gestures in spoken languages (SpLs) has shown that they are not isolated items, but that some of them are related in terms of form, meaning and motivation. That is, “gestures may constitute larger coherent groups, structural islands, which are based on common aspects of form and meaning” (Bressem and Müller 2014, 1592).
