This paper adresses the change that ocurred in the nineties which has affected the deaf community all over Spain and Catalonia, when this community´s traditional gesture system was accepted as a language. This sign system now has a new function, changing from its traditional role as a mode of communication among the different deaf groups to an instrument of symbolic power and identity of a new linguistic minority: the deaf community. This community uses LSE as its language in the different regions of Spain, and LSC in Catalonia.
