Our aim in this article is to deepen in our understanding of the phonology of Spanish Sign Language. To this end, we have taken a notion of syllabie which is consonant with that of oral languages, in which hand configurations are regarded as the syllabic nucleus. We have also tried to systematize the phonems of Spanish Sign Language by distinguishing between phoneme and allophone and by offering a few examples of the way in which phonological rules work. The result has been the possibility of creating, developing and testing a writting system based on the alphabet.
